I attended the morning Dependency 2 Change session which was a session on mentoring with Latoya. It addresses abuse, both child abuse and domestic violence and looked at the meanings of each and what each entailed.

The group split and discussed in depth the types of sexual, physical and other abuse that can take place, making notes and presenting their findings to the rest of group. Then they discussed the meaning of consent, and the differences between coercion and consent. This was discussed with regards to the types of persuasion used to convince someone to do something, be it going out or having sex.

The session continued with the facilitator asking the girls to split into groups and note down what makes a good/bad romantic relationship, what makes a good/bad friendship and what can occur in domestic violence.

The session continued with a discussion about neglect at home and in relationships. Sometimes it is not what you do in a relationship, but what you do not do.

In conclusion, the facilitator concluded that abuse is about exerting power and control. This can be counteracted by knowing what you want from a relationship and, if it does not fulfill your needs, communicate with your partner or leave. Throughout the session the girls were very attentive and engaged in the process.
